Being perfectly imperfect. The medicine of Sacred Vervain
In today’s post, I want share a little bit about Vervain. Every now and then plants call to be gifted, depending on the season, or who’s been the most talkative, so this time Blue Vervain + Angel Trumpet are coming together to support those who feel the call to connect. Since I don’t have Vervain tincture (physical alc. extract) in my apothecary, I thought it will be a good idea to share some properties + musings on here, for folks who are feeling the call to work with Vervain.
Vervain has been especially abundant last summer teaching me so much. I grow two types of Vervain in my medicine garden, Verbena Officinalis and Verbena Hastata, they are both sacred and beautiful. Many different cultures worked with Varvain for medicinal, ritual + divination purposes, to cleanse + protect, and as a dream ally. Personally for me, Vervain is the most potent dream plant. They help us connect deeper to our intuition, our wise + well Ancestors, and bring profound messages in our dream space. Many plant folks say that Vervain is a good medicine for Personality A types, for perfectionists, and doers, although speaking from personal experience, these perfectionism patters have been a coping mechanism for me, actually hiding something deeper that needed to be addressed. My journey with Blue Vervain has been very interesting, as it has mirrored a part of myself that was deeply hidden away, perhaps even difficult to acknowledge or confront. Very often, we are aware of what is truly happening within us, recognising certain habits or patterns that desperately need to change, yet we protect ourselves from exploring these deeper issues. For me, this internal pattern of disharmony often manifested as nervousness and physical tension, especially in my neck and shoulders, clenched jaw, as well as many painful knots, stiffness, and tightness, all of which Blue Vervain helped me address. When I sat with Vervain in communion I felt strong urge to yawn and open my mouth widely, feeling into the tightness in my cheeks, jaw + throat. Vervain helped me soften, and accept my humanness. I’ve always had this certain way of being when it comes to setting goals, or rigid ways of how things should be, the outcomes, and then judge and get upset with myself that I even set these goals or expectations in a first place, as if someone is watching or monitoring me. In reality, no one was obv doing that, except me. They helped me see situations from a fresh perspective and acknowledge the importance of rest for both body + mind. From this place of rest + ease I was able to channel my vital energy, passion, creative ideas, and enthusiasm in a balanced way.
Vervain brings us back into our bodies, and are amazing plant ally for folks who tend to live in their heads. They help us relax, flow and simply be, also bringing balance + harmony into our lives. Vervain teaches us how to live in a relation to others, to listen, truly listen to others, and not judge or criticise, as I mentioned above these patterns serves as a reflection of our own inner critic. When we have a hard time in letting go, when we intellectualise everything, again, bringing our consciousness to the here and now, back into the body to feel, release + restore balance. Vervain teaches us to embrace our humanness, with compassion, they help us tap into our inner guidance and share our soul gifts with the world. As a physical medicine, Vervain has a very bitter, acrid taste. They are restorative, relaxant tonic helping to bring the vital force down from the head all the way down to the pelvic region, for nervous system exhaustion, melancholy, low mood, easing anxiety, migraines, headaches, and also calm our minds, esp. when we are struggling to sleep because our minds wont turn off. Vervain moves liver stagnation, bile, stimulates digestion + secretion of fluids, brings on delayed menses, easing pms, crams, a trusted ally for hot flashes. Very supportive when we feel run down, and when we hold loads of tension in our shoulders, neck (esp. when we feel our shoulders stuck to our ears). When we carry too much. When we feel irritation + frustration. When our jaw feels clenched + tight. Beautiful ally for new mums, who may feel wired + exhausted, also Vervain has an ability to increase milk production in the mammary glands. Tincture is best extracted in higher percentage of alcohol and with fresh plant. I typically work with 60% spirit and macerate the medicine for 6+ weeks. As mentioned, Vervain is very bitter and I find them to work pretty fast and in smaller doses, between 5-15 drops.
My journey with Vervain has been woven with Angel Trumpet. Pheew, challenging time. These both plants have been the most supportive allies + teachers last year throughout summer and autumn. I have written a whole blog post about Vervain + Angel Trumpet, which I haven’t published yet, simply because I feel like I am still in the process of shedding (also physically), therefore feels more fitting to share my own experiences with these plants when the Year of the Snake is over, or maybe just right before. (of course integrating + embodying plant teachings also takes time, and often unfold with weeks, months or even years, when we get these aha moments, or epiphanies). I crafted spirit medicine with Angel Trumpet back in September ‘25, so you can have a little looksie what she’s about below. I’ve noticed that many folks connect with baneful plants, which doesn’t suprise me. I truly believe, actually, I have this KNOWING that our poison plant relatives are coming forward to help us move through the endings, chaos in the world, dying of old systems, but first and foremost help us face those darkest parts of self, those parts that we pushed aside, or protected, ways of being that are harmful or selfish. By facing ourselves and integrating these aspects we can carry our medicine forward, create new structures, and truly be in service to others, this includes tending + respecting our Earth Mother, and All of Creation. When I say poisonous plants, I don’t mean consuming any of the physical plant parts, as they are toxic and often dangerous. I am talking about their spirit and flower essences, which are vibrational remedies and safe ways of connecting with baneful plants, as they don’t contain any physical plant parts, and are highly diluted into stock bottles.
Lastly, I share these medicine stories and teachings from plants to remind you that we all face our own unique struggles and journeys in this human form. Each experience is unique, but the inner work we do on ourselves, along with the courage to face our ''demons''', brings us closer to our true true nature. Remembering, that we do not need to be "perfect" or "fully healed" in order to share our gifts, visions, and the magic we each hold within us. I love working with them for dreamwork, as they are very potent for me in this way, helping me unearth what lies in my subconscious, but also bring a lot of visions + messages, some have even come true in waking life

Angel Trumpet, Brugmansia Suaveolens Flower Essence conjured under the Full Moon + Lunar Eclipse in Pisces. There are no physical plant parts of the Angel Trumpet in this flower essence. Flower essences are a vibrational medicine without any physical components, only the spirit, life force + energetic signature. They offer a safe way to work with the poisonous plants. Themes that came through: DNA purification, freedom from pain body + releasing ancestral patterns, biological, inherited illness and intergenerational trauma. Facing, confronting shadowy aspects, behaviours with curiosity. In darkness we find answers, we find the light + truth. Mastery is in the shadow. Accepting Divine destiny, recognising our own beauty by owning the power of our gifts + creativity.
Angel Trumpet is one of the most beautiful + sacred beings with an intoxicating scent. They are a poisonous, yet in some indigenous cultures they have been worked with by experienced shamans, medicine people for healing, visioning + ancestral communication, often added into the master plant brews or ingested during the right of passage, initiation rituals. They are often confused with Datura, and although they are both from the same fam of Solanaceaea, they are different. Angel Trumpet is a beautiful guide and carries truly angelic energy. She appears when we are going through a breakdown - mental, emotional, or physical crisis, the shedding of the old. She comes when we hold onto the old, ignore our intuition, our soul path, when we refuse reality + choose to live in illusion. Brug helps us face darkest parts within. When we feel unworthy, when we carry shame and fear, often passed down through generations. She will carry us through the death of old, outdated patterns, habits, relations, situations. She will hold our hands with love + compassion when we sit with the darkest parts + feelings, showing us the light. And then, she will guide us into awakening. When the old self is dying it can feel scary, like we are losing our minds. We may feel confused, lost, overwhelmed. We can also feel unwell physically, esp. when the body is releasing misaligned energies, ancestral or intergenerational traumas, patterns or belief systems. But Angel Trumpet reminds us that we are never alone, that we can fully surrender, let go of control and pick up the shattered parts within ourselves that need love + compassion.
The Spirit of Angel Trumpet can also support us when we find ourselves in transitional state. When we know the time has come to release the old self because we no longer resonate with that part of who we were. When we are witnessing the composting of old, unhelpful, egoic patterns + behaviours, yet we haven't fully stepped into the new version of ourselves. We may still not know what this new version holds, but we already know the old aspect of self is no longer in alignment. Grieving these parts with graceful compassion, of course, but transforming + shifting into a new awareness, a new consciousness, our divine, radiant selves. Into the reclamation of our true essence.
