Bougainvillea and her vibrant spirit welcomed me with joy and child like wonder + innocence nudging me to drop the hard armour and seriousness of ‘‘adulting’’, helping me re-imagine what is like to be human walking upon this Earth, and tap in to the beauty + joy. However, her first teaching was that of a boundary + when to say no, esp. when our cup isn’t full and our whole body says NO. When to honour our intuition, needs for rest, alone time, and when to recharge without distractions, being present with everything arising for us in the.moment.
Bougainvillea grows in hot environments ~ strong sun + poor soils and requires little water, in fact, the less water and more ‘‘stressed’’ she gets, the more she will bloom. How interesting is this? In most spiritual teachings we see that period of deep suffering is a catalyst for awakening. Maybe in this way we need a wake up call, if our higher selves, spirit calls us for change, but we hold onto the ways that no longer fit, or repeat the same patterns.
These vibrant beings grow in many shapes, clinging to walls ~ shapeshifting and adapting to their environment, her thorns carry big medicine. She has a paper like “shell’’ bracts almost like a protective exterior, but inside there are tiny, true white flowers mirroring softness, vulnerability + deep sensitivity. These sweet white flowers represent who we truly are at the core.
We can think of Bougainvillea to help us find emotional equilibrium, our centre, so we can thrive + bloom in challenging situations or environments. She may be supportive when we retreat into our “protective hard shell’’, when we are hyper vigilant, in survival mode, overwhelmed by our grief, emotions, places, responsibilities, people, mothering, and feel not seen or appreciated for our efforts ,which pushes us to become withdrawn. When we over give, over care for the needs of others before our own and struggle to receive back, teaching us that reciprocity in all relations is a natural law. Shedding those patterns of self abandonment + people pleasing tendencies, scarcity, fear of softness + vulnerability and old emotional or psychological programming, restoring deeper self love, coming into harmony between our heart + intuition and deep sensitivity + boundaries.
