Breath of Life Oxymel — for deep breath, clarity + renewal. Lungs, lymph, skin + digestion support
*50ml syrup bottle*
This medicine feels like the breath of lifeeeee ~ hence its name. Do you ever find yourself unable to take that deeep, opening breath? Esp. after challenging times, stress, loss, or maybe long term sickness. My intention for this remedy was to weave a potion that invites a deep, clearing + renewing breath, one that helps release tension from the heart and maybe help ease grief, and clear what’s become stagnant, rigid or stuck.
Breath of life carries the medicines of Elecampane, Mullein, Monarda, Violet, Rose + Anise Hyssop. All plant friends grow in my medicine garden and all have been very abundant this year. They are some of my closest friends. Plant allies working together to help with opening respiratory passages, clear damp stagnation, congestion, soothe dryness + irritated lungs. They help open the heart, deepen the breath, while softening tension + grief held in heart. They also support lymphatic movement + flow, and are beautiful allies to work with during colds, coughs, flu, sore throats, or digestive upset.
Breath of Life Oxymel is a delicious, alcohol-free blend of raw apple cider vinegar, raw honey + manuka, infused with healing herbs to support the lungs, gut, digestion, skin, lymphatic + immune systems, as well as our hearts and spirits. Oxymels are one of my faves and versatile remedies that can be enjoyed in many ways: drizzled over salads, taken straight by the spoonful, added into broths, mixed with sparkling or hot water for a comforting drink, or stirred into mocktails. Beautiful to start your day with a warm water and a teaspoon of oxymel to wake up digestion, stimulate liver + bile flow. The word oxymel comes from the Greek for “acid” (oxy) and “honey” (meli). Both apple cider vinegar and honey have been treasured for centuries for their immune, respiratory, and digestive benefits, soothing sore throats and supporting overall vitality. They are rich in minerals, enzymes, beneficial bacteria, vitamins, antioxidants. Adding herbs amplifies these gifts, transforming the blend into a potent and very yummy medicine. Oxymels are one of my favourite medicines to craft, because options are endless and I can get really creative. I typically work with organic raw honey, but In this batch I blended in Manuka, for their antibacterial, antimicrobial+ protective properties.
Monarda Didyma comes through strongly in this formula. You can taste and smell her :) They are also called Bee Balm ~ ah how much I adore this beautiful plant. Fragrant and stunning, adorned by the bees. They have been with me for years, and I’m so grateful for their teachings + medicine. Part of the mint family, Monarda is spicy, warming, stimulating, and diffusive. Her flowers, leaves, and stems carry potent medicine with an affinity for the respiratory, digestive, urinary, and nervous systems. Monarda is supportive during chest infections, helping to relax the lungs and break up mucus. Monarda moves what is stagnant, whether mucus in the lungs or sinuses, sluggish digestion, or heavy, stuck energy in the body. Her warmth spreads from the core to the periphery, bringing movement and release. Amazing to work with during cold and flu season, esp. at the onset of a fever.
Mullein + Elecampane are powerfull plant allies with affinity for the respiratory system, though each works in their own unique ways. Mullein is ruled by the Air element and Saturn, softens and moisturises everything that has become hardened. Supportive when there is a dry irritable cough, or when the lymph system is sluggish + swollen due to dryness. Mullen is helpful in chronic respiratory conditions, and as a trophorestorative for the weak lungs, Mullein rehydrates, softens, tonifies and strengthen tissues that have become rigid or worn down. Mullein thrives in dry, harsh environments, yet offers these soft fuzzy leaves. I always think of Mullein to be the beautiful plant ally for folks who often hide their light and are hard on themselves, often can be their own harshest critics and judges. In this way Mullein has the ability to soften rigidity in the minds, heart and body. Elecampane has such a bold presence in the medicine garden. In their first year they grow massive leaves, then in the second year they shoot up the flowering stalks birthing these beautiful yellow, Sun like flowers. Elecampane medicine brings warmth + vitality into the system, high in volatile oils, hot, pungent, spicy and slightly bitter. Elecampane is a respiratory remedy that replenishes + rejuvenates lungs, and her warming + stimulating nature helps move stagnant phlegm and mucus, easing chest tightness, pain or shallow breathing. Where theres a boggy, congested cough, Elecampane penetrates, thins and lifts away old mucus, fluids, and generally get things moving not only in the lungs, but also in digestive system. Their bitter constituents stimulate appetite and aid in digestion. Elecampane is also high in inulin ~ the prebiotic that feeds the gut and supports healthy intestinal flora. As spirit medicine they are beautiful for folks who grieve the loss of home, who feel displaced or uprooted, and feel this longing for the home. Elecampane help us feel safe here and now, grounding us in our bodies. This bold ally gives us strength, courage + confidence, and supports us in reclamation of personal power.
Anise Hyssop ~ Their fragrance is so interesting, taste too. Love them in digestive formulas, as they help with sluggish digestion, bloating, gas. They are also beautiful to work with during colds, fevers, coughs, respiratory infections. Help to clear mucus from the lungs, break up the fever + in general support immune system. They are also very uplifting to the spirit, ease anxiety, tension, calming to the nervous system.
Violets are my favourite spring medicines. They are ruled by the Moon, Pisces, Neptune + Water element. They are a sweet, cooling + moistening plant ally helping reduce excess heat + dryness within the tissues. They are amazing for lymphatic system - cleansing, purifying + moving stagnation. Violets are beautiful to work with to uplift + comfort the heart in times of grief + sadness.
Rose completes this medicine. Fragrant petals of damask + galica roses. I added them because they are love ~ heart medicine at the core, embodiment of Divine Feminine energy, unconditional love and compassion. Venusian plants, like the Rose nurture our emotional and spiritual hearts. Physically, Rose help to cool down excess heat and reduce inflammation throughout the body, Rose acts as a gentle relaxant for the nervous system, easing mental excess, anxiety, and stress, and supporting deeper connection to the heart. Energetically, Rose helps soften a cold or closed heart, offering heart protection + boundary medicine, teaching the importance of recognising when to set a boundary, so we don't take on the energy and emotions of others into our own being.
Ingredients : Verbascum Thapsus, Inula Helenium, Monarda Didyma, Agastache Foeniculum, Viola Odorata, Damask + Galica Rose, organic Manuka + raw honey, organic raw apple cider vinegar.
