Mullein Torch (Thunder Candle, Gromnica ) /Protection + Purification
These beautiful Mullein Ritual torches were crafted to honour Our Lady of the Thunder Candle (Gromnica), Divine Mother, and the mid point between Winter Solstice + Spring Equinox. Imbolc. Back home we consecrate + light these candles for blessings + protection for the upcoming season. These beautiful torches are made from garden grown Mullein spines dipped in beeswax, then rolled in magical + protective herbs, which is such a sacred process + labour of love. This time I rolled torches in Damask Roses, Sage & Calendula, and they are just stunning. In polish, Mullein translates to Dziewanna, Devana, sharing the name with the Maiden Goddess of the forests, animals + protectress. She illuminates our path through darkness, much like Mullein herself. Dziewanna, Mullein is a biennial plant, which means that they have a life cycle of two years from germination to flowering, and seed stage. During the first year, Mullein will grow stunning rosette of silvery soft leaves covered with tiny hairs, then in the second year, they grow a tall, elongated stalk ‘‘spine’’ adorned with sweet golden yellow blooms, these spines are what we need to craft thunder candle, torch. These candles are worked with to cleanse + shield our homes from lurking spirits, or to bless and protect the land + animals, as well as to ward off illness or misfortune.
Mullein torches are known by many names, like Hag torches, witches candles and have been used as a source of light + protection against evil spirits during rituals or ceremonies. Mullein amplifies our intentions and magical practices. They are beautiful to work with when the wheel is turning, liminal or threshold times, when the veil is thinning, Samhain to call in Ancestors, during Winter Solstice too, Full + New Moons, divination. We can burn Mullein Candle to help facilitate a gentle transition back to Source + light during the time of physical death.
Burning Mullein Candles + Safety
I work with these candles indoors for my own rituals, by placing /securing them in the candle holder (I snap the base off before placing in the candle holder, so the candle fits comfortably, or drip some wax into the holder for the candle to sit). I burn them exactly the same way I would burn any beeswax taper candle. I never had any incident with them, once lit, they give off beautiful bright light and burn steadily with very little smoke. For indoor burning, hold the torch horizontally over the plate or your candle holder, as the wax will drip off and wait for the candle to ignite, then place it in the holder. Connect with Mullein, speak your intentions, ask for guidance. Beautiful to just sit with this torch and watching it burn. I also love burning them outside, by sticking the candle into the wet earth, or pot filled with soil, or sometimes just holding it for a while, depending on ritual ( wax may drip on hands). This year, Mullein torch was lit few times to cleanse + protect our home. You don’t have to burn the whole candle at once, you can dip it in water to extinguish it.
